This next month's great meeting topics is "Mistakes to Avoid". The meeting will be held at 7:00 pm, April 4, 2017, in Kennedy Hall at IC School, 1208 E. McCarty St., Jefferson City. Please bring your friends who are Mac or iOS users to our meetings.
Our October meeting was all about Apple and their new Operating Systems for iOS 10 devices and the New Mac OS 10.12 Sierra. First, I reminded our members the importance of "backing up" before a major upgrade, and a brief slideshow on how too. Then, Jason Piper showed us many of the changes with Messages and widgets. He also shared new features on the new Mac OS, but we fell short on time for George to show the changes on Apple TV and Apple Watch.
We have handed out many appleJAC-logoed Micro Fiber cloths since July, and we have had several request to buy extras. The November Meeting will be your last change to get your FREE Micro Fiber cloth for paid members, and also your first chance to buy extras. You can get an extra for just $3.00 each, or two for $5.00.
I have enjoyed the nice weather after a brief visit of the cold evenings and near frost conditions. There have not been many years when we could still water ski in mid-October. I do believe my grass is starting to go dormant (and its about time). Its great to have tailgates and afternoon football without needing a coat so far (I just wish my Tigers could win a few more games).
After serving two years as President, I will not be running for this position for next year. We are in need of some new faces on the Board. I will run for a position on the Board and would be happy to talk with anyone interested in joining me. Ask current Board members what its like -- you get to eat out an extra night each month (no dishes) with some computer gurus and offer ideas that can help all the members. You might think "I have nothing to offer to the group", but believe me, we need a few people on the Board to help remind us what the rest of the membership wants to hear about.
The following people won door prizes at the October Meeting (thanks to some of our members for their prize donations):
Bonnie Culley - iTunes Card
Mel Kallal- Mouse
Shubha Miller- 7 Port Hub

Our upcoming November 1, 2016, meeting will feature Up to 30 Gadgets in 60 Minutes at IC School(see agenda below). George Kopp will get it started by sharing whats new with Apple TV OS and the New Apple Watch OS 3. ThenTom Piper, Peggy Landwehr, Mark Snell, George Kopp and myself will give a 3-minute overview each of the gadgets we find helpful. We have left time for you to show and tell us about your favorite gadget (just let me know in advance at firstname.lastname@example.org so I can save you a spot).

iCloud has become integral to the Apple experience—it’s almost an operating system in its own right, and macOS 10.12 Sierra, iOS 10, and tvOS 10 all rely on iCloud for core functionality. If you are confused by the difference between iCloud Photo Library and My Photo Stream, have wondered if you should use two-factor authentication or two-step verification, or been unsure of what iCloud data counts against your storage space, Joe Kissell’s best-selling book, Take Control of iCloud, Fifth Edition, has the help you need. It’s the comprehensive documentation of iCloud you won’t find from Apple or anywhere else, and with your MUG discount you can pick up a copy for just $10.50, 30% off the cover price.
In the book, Joe offers insight into what iCloud is trying to do, while providing steps for key procedures and advising you on the best real-world techniques for integrating iCloud’s many services into your digital life on Macs, iOS devices, Apple TVs, and even Windows-based PCs.
“Brilliant and concise information on using current iCloud systems.” —Brian M.
This new edition is overflowing with up-to-date iCloud advice for you, explaining:
The ins and outs of Desktop and Documents folder syncing in macOS Sierra
Whether to leave the Optimize Mac Storage checkbox in Sierra selected
The six conditions that must be true for Universal Clipboard to work so you can copy and paste among your Apple devices (Mac to iPhone, iPhone to iPad, Mac to Mac, etc.)
Turning on Apple’s newer two-factor authentication (which is different from and better than two-step verification) so you don’t have to worry about your iCloud data being compromised
Getting around in the latest incarnation of iCloud Drive
“I just read Take Control of iCloud cover to cover, and it helped me sort out several problems and clear up my confusion on how iCloud works with my iMac, MacBook, iPad, and iPhone. Your book has helped me get more out of my devices and I can see it’ll make my life easier. Thanks for a job very well done!” —Andy S.
Take Control of iCloud, Fifth Edition walks you through getting started with iCloud (whether you have one or more iCloud accounts), and then explains the key aspects — and hidden gotchas — of iCloud’s capabilities. Among the many features Joe covers are <deep breath> iCloud Photo Library, My Photo Stream, iCloud Photo Sharing, Family Sharing, iTunes Match and iCloud Music Library, iCloud Drive, Optimized Storage, Universal Clipboard, Mail and Mail Drop, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, iCloud Keychain, the iCloud Web site, Find My iPhone, Find My Friends, two-factor authentication, activation lock, Back to My Mac, and backing up and restoring iOS data. (It’s a lot, we know. Hence a 182-page book!)
“As someone who hadn’t invested a lot of time in setting up iCloud before, I found this book very informative—particularly the information about managing multiple iCloud accounts and the Photos section.” —Kelly G.
Thanks for your support, which makes it possible for us to continue documenting what’s going on in Apple’s new operating systems and online services!
