1. Update Your Software
Frequency: Weekly to monthly
One of the best ways to maintain your Mac is to make sure that you're using the latest software. Mac OS X features Software Update, which will check for Apple software updates and install them in the background at a scheduled interval, or whenever you so desire.
To use Software Update, do the following:
- From the Apple menu, choose Software Update.
- Software Update will check for available updates (you will need to be connected to the Internet) and displays what it finds for your system.
- Select the updates you want to install, then click the Install button.
- Type your password in the resulting dialog, then click OK.
- You will need to agree to the software license agreement that appears. Once you do, your Mac will download and install the software you've chosen.
