The July appleJAC Meeting will be the annual appleJAC Upgradeathon. Bring your machine and let some of the club Mac experts assist you to do an upgrade, or install software. Be sure to let us know if you will be wanting to install something so we can be sure to have the necessary tools at hand.

Temporis is a productivity tool designed to create stylish timelines
and export them via PDF or TIFF for use by other applications. The
timelines can then be incorporated into other documents, or presented
in slide presentations. The Temporis interface is easy to use, allowing
you to drag and drop events. It also lets you drag events around to
easily alter the layout and scaling. Although I was able to easily
enter and create a timeline, the inability to store dates to a higher
precision than the timeline scale was limiting. I would like to see
more "Arrange" options, event sub-text, and saved print options. There
is potential for this kind of utility, but there are a number of
interface quirks and missing features to leave me feeling lukewarm
about the product. You can try Temporis for free, so you can decide for
yourself whether you can use it as-is, or whether you would prefer to
wait for the next release."

Roger Berg, 71, of Columbia passed away at 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2007.
Just a mere 15 days ago, Roger hosted the Users Group meeting at his studio in Columbia and engaged the group with history and stories of watching the digital photo revolution come of age. We all could have listened to him for many more hours.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 22, at Praise Assembly of God, 4300 Clark Lane in Columbia. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Praise Assembly of God. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Mount Rose Cemetery in Lebanon, with the Rev. Dennis Stuart officiating.
Roger was born Dec. 2, 1935, in Crookston, Minn., the son of Henry and Bernice Berg. He married Shirley Shannon Jan. 5, 1958, and she survives.
Early in his career, he managed Mattingly stores in Lebanon, Butler and Columbia. The next 23 years, he was co-owner and manager of Columbia Photo. In 1992, Roger started Creative Photo, a commercial photo studio. He has been a seminar speaker and consultant in the photo industry.
Roger Berg has written three books about portrait photography and digital imaging.
Other survivors include son Jeff Berg and Shelly Elder; daughter, Vicky Rivera and husband Eric; grandchildren Louisa and Tony Rivera; and brothers Jerry Berg and Orvis Berg.

Drobo, a storage appliance that retails for $499 without drives, employs its own disk and storage virtualization algorithms to give users many of the data redundancy benefits of RAID without RAID's complexity. With its own operating system, CPU and memory to power data handling smarts, the appliance allows you to swap failing drives in and out even as you continue working on your files.
"The technology is basically a replacement for RAID," said Daniel Stevenson, president of Data Robotics in Mountain View, Calif. With Drobo, the company wants to make data redundancy transparent and seamless to the consumer.
Plug Drobo into your system, and it's recognized as a USB mass storage device -- no host software is required on your PC to read the drive. It's also a direct-attached USB 2.0 unit with four Serial ATA drive bays that can handle drives with capacities of up to 1 terabyte each. Each bay has its own pop-out lever for easily removing a drive.

To minimize the impact of spam on .Mac members, .Mac employs several methods of detecting spam before it ever reaches your inbox. Spam prevention requires filtering mechanisms that include dynamic lists, trend analysis and content filtering.
No single strategy is completely effective when it comes to managing Unsolicited Bulk Email (UBE), also known as "spam". People who are intent on sending spam are ingenious at coming up with ways around filtration schemes. Some spam may not be filtered.
Some email may be misinterpreted as spam
Due
to the large number of variables that cause software to decide that
something is spam, some legitimate mail from friendly sources may
occasionally be blocked from ever reaching your mailbox. This scenario
is commonly called a false-positive. Some false-positives will
immediately be removed from the message systems, other false-positives
may be delayed from delivery for up to 72 hours. If you feel that a
friendly message was inadvertently deleted, you may want to ask your
friend for a follow up email before you contact support, if you notice
that multiple messages are being delayed, bounced, or not delivered,
you should contact .Mac support directly via this form:

MemoryMiner is an application that makes it possible to organize your
personal photos by date, places, and subjects, and provides some nice
export features that let you share your digital story with family and
friends around the world. This application is intended for those who
are interested in a "scrapbook" approach to your digital photos. The
application is easy to use, and provides some nice export and web
features. However, MemoryMiner can often be frustrating due to a myriad
of bugs and absence of features you would expect in a Mac application.
For a $40 shareware title, I expected better. I believe MemoryMiner is
an innovative idea, and the application does provide functionality that
lets you snaz up your digital photos for the web; however, with its
bugs and missing features impeding the user experience, it does not yet
feel like a finished product. Having these drawbacks fixed would
certainly make the product more usable."
