GPS (Global Positioning System) is an accurate worldwide navigational and surveying facility based on the reception of signals from an array of orbiting satellites. It was a revolution when the iPhone came out with GPS capabilities using Google downloaded maps which even did approximate positioning based on the location of known Wi-Fi networks. Technology has leapfrogged forward to now offer much more powerful GPS service on the same iPhone.
A couple of months ago, I transformed my iPhone4 into an incredible mobile navigation device with a bunch of very useful functions. The NAVIGON MobileNavigator 1.8 is easy to use and provides information not only on my current location, but also on route distance, time of arrival, motorway services, filling stations, speed limits and border crossings. What’s more, special destinations such as theaters, hotels, shopping centers and other sights are already integrated.
I have used it extensively during two long trips from the middle of Missouri to the middle of Nebraska, taking several alternate routes due to many inaccessible bridges resulting from the huge Missouri River floods. Thanks to smart address input and realistic map display, I never lost track and always reached intended destination safely (even with numerous scenic detours). This pocket navigation system is a terrific companion (not only in the car), and it is also ideal for optimum route planning and navigation for cyclists and pedestrians.
I was able to choose one of three different map cuttings that suited me best: U.S. West, U.S. Central or U.S. East map region. When needed, I can activate the other map regions easily through In App Purchase right from my iPhone for an even lower price and no additional download is required. It is wonderful to have current Traffic Checks, Safety Camera alerts, Reality Scanner for instant points-of-interest, the latest NAVTEQ maps, and other marvelous features, all immediately accessible (maps are loaded on the iPhone), and almost instant route corrections when I’ve changed my mind or missed a turn. I particularly like the heads-up view.
This is the best new route guide for my iPhone, and it would be an excellent companion for all frequent travelers. I own multiple Garmin dedicated GPS units, an Atlas GPS app on the iPhone, and a Kenwood GPS/sound head unit in my car . . . I believe that this MobileNavigator app now outperforms all of them. My only disappointment is that I can only use it for reference on my iPad 2 since it only has Wi-Fi (no built-in GPS), and cannot (yet) use an external Bluetooth GPS antenna (which I have). MobileNavigator 1.8 is compatible with iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G iPad 3G and iPad 2 3G. The app also runs on first generation iPhone and iPod Touch, but third-party accessories for GPS reception are required for these devices (iOS multitasking is supported by the iPhone 4 and 3GS only). The view is crisp and clear, very informative, and announces turn-by-turn guidance through my car’s speaker system (using an iPhone cable or Bluetooth). I can’t say enough good things about this iPhone-based GPS app. NAVIGON has accuracy, efficiency, clarity, speed, and flexibility built-in at a very reasonable price. I used it side-by-side with my Kenwood (Garmin-based) car unit and Apple’s Maps app, and got as good or better results in virtually every aspect of its use from routing to points of interest to speed alerts (even reminding me if I wandered more than 5 miles over the posted speed limit). I’m sold on it, and highly recommend it.
